“Why didn’t you tell us about Thorn Bedford?” Brad growled at Benita as he rubbed his eyes. Whatever juice Thorn filled him full of was sure taking time to wear off.

Benita lifted her right hand and touched the white bandage wrapped around her head. “Are you sure I should have been discharged from the hospital?” she asked in a worried voice, ignoring Brad’s temper. “I did take a bad fall…and my head does hurt.”

Billy leaned back against the kitchen counter and shook his head. Sure, Benita was safely back in his farmhouse sitting at the kitchen table working down a cup of coffee, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t mighty angry. “You should have spilled the beans…all the beans, gal,” he fussed.

“I know…I know,” Benita whined and quickly took a sip of coffee. “But…Thorn…who knew?”

“What do you mean?” Rita asked, standing beside the back door watching a gray, stormy morning appear before her eyes as the last drips of a dark night slowly faded away.

Rhonda sat down across from Benita with a plain donut in her hand. Billy, the varmint, had scarfed down all the good donuts. “Benita,” she said, “Brad could have been killed. Now isn’t the time to withhold any more secrets, okay? We’re all very exhausted and not in the mood to play ring-around-the-rosy.”

Benita lifted her tired and worried eyes, looked into Rhonda’s stern face, and winced. “I’m sorry. You know…a girl just…well, a girl has to keep some secrets.”

Rhonda studied Benita’s eyes. “I think I understand.”

“Yeah…you’re a smart one so you probably do,” Benita sighed. “So go ahead and spill the beans…but with kid gloves. Leave me a little pride…please.”

Rhonda took a bite of her donut and glanced over at Rita. “I think we have a sour romance.”

“Sour?” Benita asked. “I’d say more like poison mixed with vinegar mixed with some TNT.”

“We’re all ears, Benita,” Rita said, hungry for sleep. She left the back door, walked over to the kitchen counter, snatched up a blueberry muffin, and took a small bite. “Who is Thorn Bedford?”

Billy glared at Benita with a hard eye. “The truth, gal,” he demanded, “or I’m going to put my work boot on your backside.”

Brad, who was leaning in the kitchen doorway, rubbed his eyes again. “Get on with it,” he barked. “I can barely see straight as it is…so just get on with it.”

Benita made a pained face. Boy, was she ever in a mess. “Well…Mr. Agatha caught on to Lloyd’s little charade,” she began as her mind walked back in time and entered a stuffy little office sitting down a long, fancy hallway lined with treasures only the rich and famous could afford. She saw Lloyd Debkins sitting at an expensive mahogany desk that didn’t go with the cramped office Mr. Agatha had assigned him. She saw a grumpy gray-haired man with cold eyes hunched over a bunch of financial files as his right hand danced with a calculator.

“Mrs. Owens told me, in secret, of course—Mrs. Owens and Mr. Agatha had once been sweet on each other, you see—that Mr.
